The Sierra Ensemble performed one of the glories of chamber music--the op. 40 Horn Trio by Brahms. Also on the program  were works by Saint-Saens, Tchaikovsky, Piazzolla and a work especially written for the Sierra Ensemble, Outbursts, an Homage to Brahms by Martha Stoddard.


Eve-of-New-Year's-Eve-Gala          December 30, 2011

The coming new year celebrated one day early!

FBCA again presented a celebration acknowledging our supporters and our audience. The afternoon Gala on the day before New Year's Eve was a full concert with three pairs of duo-pianists performing works by Ravel:

          Carolyn Steinbuck and Jason Kirkman
          Richard Goodman and Jack Leung
          Elizabeth MacDougal and Elena Casanova

                 The Gala Concert in the Goodman's home in Mendocino was 
                        followed by supper with seasonal food and wine.

Pianist Ching-Yun Hu          January 29, 2012

Since winning the top prize in the 2008 Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, Ms. Hu has been in great demand both as a concerto soloist and recitalist. Just this spring, she was in Moscow competing in the International Tchaikovsky competition.

Her program included Beethoven's Sonata in A Major, Op. 101, Nocturne and Impromptu by Scriabin, Fantastic by Schumann, and Arabesque on the Beautiful Blue Danube by Strauss/Schultz-Evler.


The Ives Quartet          April 1, 2012          3:00 P.M.

The Ives Quartet is one of the Bay Area's outstanding string quartets. The San Jose Mercury News reported, "the Ives' arresting sound was again on display: robust, rigorous and beautifully blended." Critic Keith Kreitman wrote, "[The Ives Quartet has the] most beautiful, rich sound of any string quartet I had ever heard." They will perform works by Haydn, Quincy Porter, and Schubert's Death and the Maiden quartet.

The Ronen Trio          April 29, 2012          3:00 P.M.

All three members of this trio are performing soloists as well as chamber musicians. The youngest, Ms. Lo, is in great demand as an outstanding accompanist. Ms. Ronen is principal flute of the North State Symphony, and Burke Schuchmann, the Bay Area cellist who plays to your heart, has performed many times in Mendocino: for the Festival, the Symphony, and for the FBCA.

Dan Smiley and Jonathan Shames, Violin and Piano

Mr. Smiley's stunning performance last year of the gorgeous Barber Violin Concerto with the Symphony of the Redwoods produced wild applause from an audience hoping for more of the same. He performs with Pianist Jonathan Shames, a recipient of the Finalist Diploma Award at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Competition. The duo has been recognized for their               technical brilliance, scholarship, and deep artistry.
